This past weekend was full of activities for area youth and community members as the Ty Detmer TYDL camp came to town, providing sports camps for area youth for three full days. The featured camps in volleyball, basketball, soccer, tennis and football were led by former college or professional stars.

The football camp was led by none other than Ty Detmer himself. Detmer was a Heisman Trophy Winner who also had 14 seasons in the NFL. Detmer, joined by Leonard Fournette of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, provided unique skills training for aspiring football players.

The other coaches brought their talents from their specific sport and shared their knowledge with local youth. Angela White, who played for Louisiana State University (LSU) and also played professional beach volleyball, led the volleyball camp. DeMya Wheatfall, a 14-year veteran of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), led the basketball camp. Heather Dyche of the University of New Mexico women’s soccer team led the soccer campers. Carmen and Ivana Corley of the University of Oklahoma led the tennis campers. The Corley’s have strong ties to the Cibola County area.

The camp is a partnership between The Rotary Club of Grants-Milan, the City of Grants, Ed Corley Ford and other local business and entities. The event also featured a golf tournament and corn hole tournament, as well as an auction.
