GRANTS, N.M. – All fields at the Candelaria Sports Complex, also known locally as Wells Park, are closed this week for emergency safety maintenance, according to a public notice issued by city officials.

The closure runs from Tuesday, May 26, through Friday, May 29. During that time, there will be no practices at the complex and all games scheduled this week will be made up later, according to the notice.

City officials said they expect to resume a full week of games on Monday, June 1, if the issue is resolved.

The temporary closure affects one of Grants’ key youth sports sites, disrupting practices and games during an active stretch of the local recreation season.

The city’s notice did not specify what safety issue prompted the emergency work, only stating that all fields at Wells Park would be closed for the week and apologizing for the inconvenience.

For local families, the closure means a pause not only in scheduled games, but in the regular use of one of the city’s central baseball and softball facilities.

The Cibola Citizen has reached out for additional information on what specific maintenance issue triggered the closure, how many teams are affected, and whether the complex remains on track to reopen June 1 as scheduled.

Editor’s Note: Prior to press deadline, City of Grants Manager Andrew Valecnia confirmed the facility is closed for repairs, and said that a grantsfrom the state will also be utilized during this time to repair fencing and lighting at Candelaria Sports Complex.
