Bluewater Lake is open for fishing right now, even though the lake is frozen over.
Even in winter, fishing opportunities are still available at Bluewater State Park. Ice fishing is a very popular activity and can be done at both Eagle Nest and Bluewater Lakes. Tiger muskie bite all year long at Bluewater Lake.
Fishing Rating: Fair – for ICE FISHING According to the New Mexico Game and Fish, fishing for trout was slow to fair when using Orange Gulp Minnows in open water between the ice. The lake is closed to boating, with the surface approximately 80 percent frozen over with ice thickness at two-inches and less. For those traveling from Albuquerque, Bluewater Lake is approximately 105 miles (1 hour, 52 minutes). Follow these directions:
• Take I-40 W toward Gallup.
• Exit 63 toward Prewitt.
• Turn left at NM-412 S and continue to Bluewater Lake State Park.
