There was one, then two, three and finally four. Pirate grapplers are sending off four to the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) state wrestling tournament after earning their way last weekend at the Region 1 championships.

GHS placed ninth out of 19 schools with 74 points.

Senior Larry Meador,29-4, placed second after a defeat by Tony Thompson (Aztec) 42-3 by a fall (3:44) in 145-pound weight class in the championship bout.

Michael Douglas,12-7, a sophomore, was defeated by Cole Gosnell (Bloomfield),31-12, in a 5-0 decision in his championship bout. Senior Ty Mahkee, 23-13, was defeated in the fifth place bout by Deegan Keenon (Aztec) 25-11 by a fall (3:04).

Senior Manuel Gonzales, 27-9, placed sixth after a forfeit in the 5th place bout by Alonso Bitsui (Kirtland Central), 28-18.

Aztec High School came in first in the regional meet with 243 points followed by Bloomfield, second place, with 224 points and Miyamura in third place with 284 points.
