After three years Douglas “Dougie” Hickman has put his clipboard away and has resigned as the head of the GHS girls’ basketball program.

“It was enjoyable, I learned a lot, I always told my players that I learned a lot about administering and coaching a team,” said Hickman. “Things that you have to balance and take in consideration are coaching and a fulltime regular job—I work in Albuquerque—that was challenging.”

Hickman was satisfied with reaching some goals he had set out to complete such as getting his younger players enough playing experience to move them up to “first string” varsity and giving inexperienced players enough playing time to mature and move-up.

Memorable moments for Hickman were his team's performance at the Rio Rancho tournaments,” Playing in the RR tournament in the first couple of years, the team did well against tough teams they always gave 110% and played their hearts out,” said Hickman as he reminisced about his tenure as head coach.

Hickman finished the season 4-22 and 1-7. Last season (2022-2023) the team 10-16, 2-6 and in his first year (2021-2022) the team went 8-17, 3-5.

Grants-Cibola County Schools is now accepting applications to fill the position.
