The road has not been kind to the Pirates as they drop their fourth game on the road to the Valencia Jaguars by a score of 50-6. The young Pirates struggled on offense as they were unable to garner more than 6 points off a pass from quarterback Tyler Everhart to Knight Long in the first quarter. Everhart connected with Long for a 40-yard pass to put the Pirates on the five-yard line. Everhart connected once again with Long with a short seven-yard pass for the Pirates lone touchdown of the night.

Grants High School Head Coach Brandon Hernandez said of the game, “Valencia played well, and we had a few key players sit out once again… Their offense presents a lot of issues for defenses to address… Their [quarterback] had some success on the ground when we covered up their passing concepts. We need to do a much better job in the turnover ratio.”

Hernandez later added, “Our team is getting closer to each other every day. I think we are starting to play for each other, and I believe that we will see the pay-off soon.”

The Pirates on a bye week are currently 1-6,0-1, and will head out for the fifth road game in two weeks against the Chargers of Albuquerque Academy (6-1,1-0) on September 15th.

“We are prioritizing four things this week: Grades, Health, Football IQ, and Competition. If we focus on those four things leading up to Academy, we will be in good shape. The Chargers had a great win over a tough Bernalillo team at home last week, so you know they're riding high. They are tough up front on the offensive and defensive line,” said Hernandez of his bye week and next match up.
