The Laguna-Acoma Lady Hawks defeated the Dulce Hawks (19-78, 5-1) on Monday, February 20 in a tie breaker by a score of 54-41 to take first place in district 1-2A. Both teams were 5-1 prior to the playoff. The Lady Hawks finished up district play with a 18-9, 5-1 record and await to play in the district championship game on Saturday, February 25, at Laguna- Acoma High School.

“Our game plan was to play our tempo—it unfolded well—we got an early lead and we kept our composure throughout the game,” said Daryl Mariano, head coach of the Lady Hawks. The Lady Hawks eagerly await their opponent for Saturday who will be determined after district playoffs.

High scorers for the Lady Hawks were Gianna Carillo with 14-points followed by Brianna Carillo and Silvia Gedman with 12points apiece. Mariano and his team will be practicing this week to prepare for Saturday. Rehoboth Christian is third in the district with a 1014, 2-4 record followed by Navajo Pine with a 4-22, 0-6 record.

The Laguna-Acoma Boys’ Basketball team broke their five game losing streak with a win over Pine Hill (719, 1-5) on Monday, February 20 by a score of 6-51 in a tie breaker for 3rd place in the district standings. Rehoboth Christian (15-9, 6-0) is 1st in that district followed by Dulce (14-12, 4-2).

Pirates

District Basketball play wrapped up with the Grants Pirates Boys’ Basketball breaking their three-game losing streak and defeating the Belen Eagles on February 14 by a score of 62-53. “Tuesday’s win was much needed and well deserved— we battled against a good team who would not let up pull away,” said GHS head coach Landon Chavez “Our record isn't a reflection of how well we are playing right now.” The Pirates played Valencia High School (13-14, 50-3) on Monday, February 20 in the start of the district tournament and lost 76-63. The Pirates’ record is 9-17, 2-7, and they were fifth in the district just after Belen.

The Lady Pirates broke their three-game losing streak and defeated the Belen Eagles (8-17, 0-8) by a score of 42-51. The Lady Pirates are currently 10-15, 2-6 and will play Valencia High School (17-9, 4-4) on the road on Tuesday, February 21.
