Pirate baseball 4-4 as season starts

GHS boy’s baseball went 1-1 after a double-header on Saturday, April 17 against the Academy Chargers.

In the first game the Pirates scored two runs in the first inning to make the score 2-0. The Chargers responded with a run in the second inning to make the score 2-1 Pirates. Junior Mauricio Chavez, threw 88 pitches and had two strikeouts with no walks for the Pirates in that first game.

“I thought it was going to be a tough game. I didn’t know how hard they were going to hit,” said Chavez of his first game pitching this season.

The scoring needle did not move and after seven innings the Pirates had a 1-0 record. The record was short lived as the Pirates lost the second game to the Chargers, 30-8.

On April 24, the Pirates had another double header with the Miyamura Patriots. The first game they lost 9-5 and the in the second game they lost 10-5.

Their next game is slated for Saturday, May 1, against the Kirt land Broncos (0-2) at Kirtland.

GHS girl’s softball is slated to begin on April 30 with an away game, scheduled for 5 p.m. against the Gallup Bengals.
