The Grants High School baseball team is 9-4 overall after going 1-2 over the weekend at the Farmington Scorpion Invitational Tournament. On Thursday, March 17, the Pirates went toe-to-toe with Farmington High School (10-1) in the first game of the tournament and narrowly defeated the Scorpions in 8 innings. The Pirates scored two runs in the 1st inning and Scorpions scored three runs in the 3rd inning to give the Scorpions the lead by one after 4 innings. The Pirates scored a run in the 5th and 7th innings to make a total of four runs scored for the game. The Scorpions added one run in the 6th and a crucial run in the 8th to give them the 5-4 win after 8 innings.

Izeyah Manzanares had two RBI’s in that game and Tyler Everhart added one RBI in that game. Izeyah Manzanares, Mauricio Chavez and Tyler Everhart had two hits apiece while Markos Garcia, Dominick Gonzales, Nick Bustos and Andres Lopes had one hit apiece. Scoring one run apiece for the Pirates were Mauricio Chavez, Diego Lopez, Andres Lopez and Tyler Everhart. Pitching for the Pirates were Mauricio Chavez and Dominick Gonzales.

In their second game of the tournament, on Friday March 18, the Pirates squared off with the Aztec Tigers (6-5) and defeated them 5-3 in 7 innings. Mauricio Chavez and Tyler Everhart had two RBI’s apiece and Dominick Gonzales while Andres Lopez added one RBI. Mauricio Chavez had two hits in that game and Dominick Gonzales, Gabriel Marquez, Andres Lopez, Tyler Everhart and Caleb McDougale had one hit apiece. Mauricio Chavez, Dominick Gonzales, Nick Bustos, Andres Lopez and Caleb McDougale scored one run each.

The Pirates played in the consolation game on Saturday, March 19, against the Academy Chargers (10-3)and lost that contest 13-3. The first inning remained scoreless, then the Charges came alive scoring six runs in the 2nd inning while the Pirates were able to score one run in the 2nd as well. Academy went on to score two runs in the 3rd, four runs in the 4th and 1 run in the 5th for a total of 13 runs. The Pirates mustered two runs in the 5th inning as the game came to a close after 5 innings. Next up the Pirates will have a doubleheader at home on Saturday, March 26 against the Kirtland Central Broncos (6-5). Previously the Pirates defeated the Broncos on February 26 by a score of 13-2.

The Lady Pirates softball team struggles continue and are 1-8 after losing a doubleheader on the road when they traveled to play Albuquerque Academy (9-4) on Tuesday, March 15. The first game went 3 innings as Academy went on to defeat the Lady Pirates 20-3. In the second game the Lady Pirates lost by a score of 19-4. Next up for the Lady Pirates will be an away game on Tuesday, March 22 against the Miyamura Patriots (5-4).

The Laguna-Acoma Hawks baseball team is 0-2 after losing to Santa Fe Indian School (4-2) in double header action on Wednesday, March 16, the Hawks lost 19-0 and 13-2. Next up for the Laguna-Hawks will be a game against the Thoreau Hawks (2-0) on Tuesday, March 22. The Lady Hawks also lost their doubleheader games 11-1 and 15-0 against the lady Braves of Santa Fe Indian. Next up for the Lady Hawks will be a home game on Thursday, March 24 against the Estancia Bears (0-3)
