Any way you look at it, whether it’s the coach’s poll (NMOT-Sports 6th) or the state rankings (10th in 4-A) the Pirate baseball team is in the top 10 and looking to be a top contender once again this season.

“I feel that we are sitting right where I expected us to be at this point of the season,” said GHS head baseball coach Mike Furbee “We just got our basketball players out and it will take a week or two to get them caught up.”

Currently the Pirates record is 7-5 and most recently went 1-2 at a tournament in the 4 corners where they were defeated by 5-A Piedra Vista,11-2. They succumbed to the Uintah Utes, of Vernon Utah, by a score of 6-2 in the second game. The Pirates defeated Chinle by a score of 10-0 in their third game of that tournament.

“At this point we are taking things one day and one game at a time,” said Furbee whose team was district champ last year (5 4-A). Furbee was also named coach of the year of district 5 4-A last year as well.

With a philosophy of one game at a time Furbee is preparing for his next game, at home, against the Miyamura Patriots (18). “We went into last season’s game as a heavy favorite—but they gave us all we could handle— beating us.” said Furbee of Miyamura. “We are definitely not looking past them this time.”

Last season the Patriots narrowly defeated the Pirates 6-5 in 8 innings.

The match up with Miyamura will be March 27 at 6 pm Cibola County Sports Round-up Currently, the GHS girls’ tennis team is 3-3 and will play at Valencia High School on April 2.

The GHS boys’ tennis team will also travel to Valencia on April 2nd and their record is currently 14.

The GHS track and field team participated most recently at the Jim Burke Invitational in Belen.
