The GHS baseball team is tactfully navigating the seas of district play as they won their last two district games. With those two wins, they extended their winning streak to eight games and improved their record to 17-5. Currently the Pirates are ranked second in the maxpreps. com state rankings for 4-A, just after St. Pius whom they defeated on March 31 by a score of 10-9. Belen, another district rival, is ranked third in the state. The Pirates are currently ranked number one in district 5 4-A just ahead of the Valencia Jaguars and St. Pius.

On April 4 they defeated the Highland Hornets (1-13,0-3) by a score of 19-1. On Friday, April 7 they traveled to Belen High School (14-5,1-2) and defeated them 10-4.

“We played well in a tough environment,” said GHS baseball head coach Mike Furbee of the Belen game.

Nico Young came through for the Pirates as he pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three hits, four runs, three earned runs, four walks and eight strikeouts. Young also was a factor in offense with five RBIs, two hits, one run and three at-bats. Dominick Gonzales wrapped up that game pitching 1.2 innings allowing one hit, two walks and two strikeouts. Izeyah Manzanares had thee RBIs, four hits, one run and four at-bats in that game.

“He (Young) stepped up big on the mound as well as at the plate—it was his first taste of district play and he handled it well,” said Furbee.

The Pirates next game will be another challenge as they play the Valencia Jaguars (8-12, 2-1) on Friday, April 14 on the road. The Lady Pirates softball team is currently 4-12,1-3 and will host Valencia High School (4-13,2-1) on Thursday, April 13.

Lady Pirate track sensation Laila Martinez, a ninth grader, participated on Monday, April 10 at the prestigious and inviteonly Marilyn Sepulveda Track meet at the University of New Mexico track and field over the weekend. Martinez placed second in the 1600 meter with a time of 5:24.31 and also placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:31.91.

The GHS track and field team participated at the Harry Hays invitational at Bloomfield High School on April 6. Notables for the Pirates were Knight Long who placed eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.95. Long also placed eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.96. John Paul Miller placed ninth in the 3200-meters with a time of 12:18.55. Jenna Gurule placed ninth in the 200meter dash with a time of 30.52.

The Lady Pirates tennis team is currently 3-0 in district 5 4-A after sweeping the Lady Sartans of St. Pius 9-0 in a recent meet. The GHS boys’ tennis team is 0-6 and 0-3. The Laguna-Acoma Hawks baseball teams is currently 3-2 and the Lady Hawks softball team is currently 1-6.
