Pirates Go 3-0 Before Districts

The Pirate went 3-0 last week after shutting out Miyamura High School (1-9), a team who narrowly defeated them last year, by a score of 110. The team had 22 at bats, 10 hits and 10 RBIs in that 11-0 shellacking of the Patriots. Estevan Barela was the winning pitcher of the game.

Barela went four innings, allowed zero runs, one hit and struck out nine batters as well as two RBI’s.

“Good to get these wins going into district play,” said GHS head baseball coach Mike Furbee. “I feel that we still haven’t played our best ball yet but are definitely moving in the right direction.”

The following double header against Kirtland Central saw more of the Pirates talents shine as they routed the Broncos in two games, 9-2 and 22-1.

In that first game against KC, Isaiah Manzanares led the Pirate charge with 3 RBI’s, 2 hits, 2 runs and 4 at bats. Niko Young pitched 5 innings allowing 2 hits, 1 run and 3 strikeouts. Dominick Gonzales pitched 2 innings allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run and 7 strikeouts. Isaiah Manzanares had another big game with 7 RBI’s, 4 hits, 2 runs and 4 at bats. Ethan Taylor had 4 RBIs followed by Gonzales with 3 RBIs in that game. Manzanares pitched 3.1 innings and allowed 3 hits, 1 run, 1 earned run and 5 strikeouts. Ethan Taylor pitched 1.2 innings and allowed 4 hits, 1 run, 1 earned run and 6 strikeouts.

The Pirates start district play on Tuesday, April 2nd on the road against the Valencia Jaguars. “Valencia is a team that always seems to give us a good game–so we need to be expecting a battle to play well,” said Furbee of the match up with the Jaguars. For their part the Jaguars, who are 6-10 lost their last 3 games at the recent tournament. They lost to East Mountain, 9-10 then lost a close one to 5-A Cibola by a score of 11-10. In their last game they lost 85 to another 5A school, the Los Lunas Tigers.

CIBOLA COUNTY SPORTS ROUND-UP

The GHS lady Pirate tennis team is currently 33 after a 9-0 defeat over Valencia High School (0--7). Number 1 Kylee Sandoval defeated Ava Eylicio 6-1, 6-0. The GHS boy’s tennis team is currently 15 and lost to Valencia High School 9-0. Number 1 Isaiah Tena lost to Daniel Altobello 7-5, 4-6.

The GHS track team participated in the Jim Burke Invitational at Belen High School recently. The boys placed 2nd at the meet with a total of 75 points. The Girls placed 4th with a total of 65 points.

In the 1600-meter run Laila Martinez placed first with a time of 5:45.21 in the girl’s race. John Paul Miller placed 3rd in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:09.24.

In the 1600 sprint medley the GHS boys placed 2nd with a time of 4:22.20. Miller placed 4th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.51at a recent track meet. Santiago Paredes placed 4th in the discus throw with a throw of 109-05.00.

In the 4x40 relay the lady Pirates placed 3rd with a time of 4:53.59 in the 300 Hurdles Jenna Gurule placed 3rd with a time of 54.54.

In the girls’ discus throw Tori Felipe placed first with a throw of 9703.00 and teammate Ryhan Brown placed 2nd with a throw of 75.08.00.

Allison Hobbs placed 4th in the girls long jump with a jump of 13-10.50. Felipe placed 1st in the javelin throw with a throw of 98.06.00. Felipe also placed 2nd in the shot put with a throw of 27-03.50.
