Pirates on Six Game Winning Streak after Sweeping Del Norte

GRANTS, N.M. –

The Grants High School Pirates are currently on a six game winning streak as they brought the broom out and swept the Del Norte Knights (1-7) in a doubleheader on Saturday, February 12, 15-4 and 18-0.

The Pirates, in the first game, exploded for 10 runs in the second inning to give them a commanding lead. The Knights answered back with four runs of their own in the second inning, however, the Pirates never looked back and in fact added three runs in the 4th and then two more runs in the 4th inning for the final score of 15-4. Six players had RBI’s for the Pirates; Markos Garcia, Mauricio Chavez, William Archuleta, Izeyah Manzanares and Nick Bustos had two RBI’s each, and Gabriel Marquez had one RBI for the Pirates. Marquez also scored three runs for the Pirates, as did Nick Bustos. Pitching for the Pirates were Markos Garcia and Delfino Gonzales.

Game 2

The second game was all Pirates because Del Norte was unable to mount any offense and the 18-0 score was telling. The Pirates scored all their runs in the first 5 innings. Senior Tyler Everhart had five RBIs in that game and six more players had RBIs. William Archuleta and Nick Bustos pitched for the Pirates in that game.

The Pirates will hit the road this Tuesday and play the Capital Jaguars (3-4) on Tuesday, March 15 and then they will travel to Farmington High School on Thursday, March 17 to play in a tournament.

Lady Pirate Softball

The Lady Pirates softball team continues to struggle with a current 1-6 record after dropping a recent game on Saturday, March 12 to the lady Broncos of Kirtland Central by a score of 16-1. Next up for the lady Pirates will be an away game with the lady Chargers of Academy (5-2) on Tuesday, March 15.

Cibola County Sports Wrap-Up

Grants High School boys tennis team is 1-2 after losing in a recent series to Espanola Valley High School, 7-1. The Pirates also placed fifth at the recent Farmington Invitational. The lady Pirates tennis team is 1-3 after two recent losses to Espanola High School, 9-0 on Friday March 11 and to Belen High School 9-0 on Saturday March 12.

The Laguna-Acoma Hawks who are led by first year head coach Brandon Gonzales will have their 2022 season home baseball opener on Wednesday, March 16. They will play Santa Fe Indian School in that game and that will be the Braves first game of the season as well. Across the mound, the lady Hawks softball team will also have their season opener on Wednesday, March 16 against Santa Fe Indian Braves as well. The Lady Hawks are headed by head coach Amy Arkie.
