The Pirates added two wins recently and improved to 12-3. “The past few games have been confidence builders,” said Grants High School head boys’ basketball coach Landon Chavez. “We had a crucial road victory against Bernalillo—-Wingate was a great game to continue to execute our game plan—Miyamura was another dominate performance”.

The Pirates fresh off the 76-73 defeat of Bernalillo on January 5 hosted the Wingate High School(6-6) on January 9 and handily defeated them 66-40.

Score leaders for the Pirates were Noah Victorino with 13 points followed by John “JJ” Horacek with 11 points and Boudy Melonas with 10 points.

On the 13th of January the Pirates hosted the Miyamura Patriots (1-13) and handed them their 12th defeat by a score of 89-56.

Top scores for the Pirates were Boudy Melonas with 17, Noah Victorino with 16 and Antonio Torivio with 13 points apiece.

The Pirates who are currently ranked fifth in the www.maxpreps.com rankings will next meet up with the fourth ranked 6-6 Hope Huskies on the road on Tuesday the 16th of January.

“This will be our biggest 4-A basketball test so far,” said Chavez “They are big, can shoot the ball extremely well, and are always very fundamental— and don’t make any mistakes—we will have to be on our A game”.

The Pirates will also host the 8-5 Capital Jaguars on January 18 and the following day on the 19th. They will host St. Michael's High School (76). “This week will be a great tune-up for districts which start next week–we have racked up 1,084 points over our last 15 matches—-we look to continue that dominance,” said Chavez.

CIBOLA COUNTY SPORTS ROUND-UP

The Grants Lady Pirates Basketball team are currently 3-13 after a narrow 39-34 loss to the 4-10 Miyamura Patriots. Next up for the Lady Pirates will be the 8-9 Lady Elkettes of Pojoaque Valley High School in an away game.

Larry Meador, a senior, placed first in the 145pound weight class at the 3rd Annual Sammy Vivian Invite at Socorro High School over the weekend. In addition, Ty Mahkee placed fourth in the 215-pound weight class.

Lady Pirate wrestlers were also well represented at the meet with Danika Wilson taking second in the 185-pound weight class. Raeyna Valdez also placed second in the 120-pound weight class. Allie Clawson placed third in the 100pound weight class and Jaylene Morin placed fourth in the 152-pound weight class.

The Lady Hawks basketball team is currently 6-5 after barreling through Raton High School by a score of 5912. They will play Zuni High School (7-5) on the road on January 16. The Laguna-Acoma boys basketball team is 1-14 after a 58-41 loss to Menaul High School (6-6) on January 16.
