Your GHS hometown Pirates went on the road this past Saturday to take on the Hope Huskies (2-3) and came up with a great 35-18 win. “We wanted to really open up our running attack and I think we did that. Our offense put up 200+ yards rushing between Andres Lazos, Doug Mitchell, DJ Chavez and Julian Padilla,” said GHS head coach Steve Brown. “Offensive Coordinator, Rio Thompson, said it was a great game and our players executed very well! We amassed a total of 300 yards on offense, putting the ball in the endzone four times.”

The Pirates led 14-10 at the half and scored 14 points in the third quarter while holding the Huskies to zero points in the third. “I also feel that our defense played very well. We had a few kids that normally would see limited time that got to play in key positions due to others not being able to go because of nagging injuries and I am very proud of how they played for us,” said Brown.

The Pirates added a touchdown and extra point in the fourth quarter while the Huskies added 8 points to wrap that quarter and the game.

Multiple Pirates played a role in the 35-18 points victory: two interceptions by Noah Lundstrom, two interceptions by Manny Gonzales, one, interception by Andres Lazos, a blocked punt by Clemente Garcia and recovery for TD by Larry Meador, a forced fumble and fumble recovery by Doug Mitchell were some of the key plays on Defense and two TD passes by DJ Chavez to Isaiah Ortega and Cardenio Chavez as well as one Touchdown running by DJ and another by Andres Lazos Next up for the Pirates is an away game against the Kirtland Central Broncos (2-2).

“Kirtland Central is going to be a tough matchup for us. They are big on both lines and have some good sized receivers as well. Their Quarterback is calm under pressure and throws well on the run. They run a wide variation of formations on offense that we will have to be ready for,” said Brown “Defensively, they get after the QB pretty well so once again, we are going to put the pressure on our O-Line and see if they can rise to the occasion again this week. We are definitely excited for the opportunity ahead of us this week.”
