GALLUP, N.M. - Braving long traffic backups on the return drive fans who had traveled to Gallup were able to watch the Grants High School Pirate varsity football team handily defeat the hosting Gallup Bengals. The GHS Pirates are 2-0 after defeating the Bengals 51-0 on the road this past Friday at Ford Stadium.

The Pirates wasted no time with a quick 65-yard touchdown, 6-0, by senior running back Terrell Hocker with slightly more than six minutes left in the first quarter – the Pirates missed an extra point attempt. In the second quarter, Hocker landed his second TD of the night, after he rushed 81 yards to put the Pirates up 12- 0, but a second missed extra point. After a successful drive, with six minutes left in the second quarter, junior quarterback Brandon Furbee sprinted four yards and scored a TD on a quarterback keeper to make the score 18-0 with the 2-point conversion no good.

Six was the magic number for junior Dominic Martinez, who had a pick 6 and ran 46 yards for the Pirates for the fourth touchdown of the night with six minutes on the clock. The Pirates followed with an extra-point kick by Michael Trujillo and the score was 25-0. With just less than four minutes left before the end of the second quarter, Hocker struck again with a 55-yard fumble recovery; he returned to make the score 31-0, but another missed extra point attempt. Not quite done yet, quarterback Furbee was able to connect a short 10-yard pass to Dominic Martinez for a touchdown and the score was 37- 0. A 2-point conversion from Furbee to Hocker was good for a halftime score of 39-0.

With eight minutes left, Furbee made a 51-yard pass to Tyler Everhart for a touchdown and a new score of 45-0, which stayed until the fourth quarter. Early in the final quarter Hocker made his fourth TD of the night, a short five-yard run, to knockout the Bengals 51-0.

Next up for the Pirates will be the Kirtland Central Broncos, 3-0, who are coming off a 33-21 win against the Miyamura Patriots (0-3).
