Pirates are on a 2-0 run after defeating the Hope Huskies two weeks ago , and now they defeated the Kirtland Broncos, by 12 points, in a high scoring game on the road. “We really wanted to establish the run game to give our passing game a chance to work,” said Grants High School head coach Steve Brown. “I think we accomplished that—-Andres Lazos went for 343-yards on 19 carries and had four touchdowns. Brown also had praise for his offensive line, “That also tells us that the offensive line did a great job—as a result we saw our QB, Deandre Chavez, have his best day as well,” said Brown. Chavez went 10 for 18 passing for a total of 180yards and two touchdowns to Cardeno Chavez and Knight Long.

While brown had much praise for the offense, he acknowledges that the defense, who allowed 42 points, needs to be addressed. “It’s obvious our defense did not play a good game—-I’ve got to do a better job (defensively), making sure we are prepared and going forward I will make sure of it,” said Brown.

Stat leaders for the Pirates in this game were: Knight Long, who had an interception and a 54yard scamper for a TD on offense and Julian Padilla also scored one on the ground, while Cardenio Chavez had a 60-yard touchdown reception. Noah Lundstrom put up 13 points of his own in the kicking game. Defensively, we forced 3 Interceptions and a Fumble, which was recovered by Brian Marez. Brandon Wheeler had a strong defensive game with 14 tacks.

The Pirates have a bye week this week and will play Taos (2-3) on October 6 in an away game.

“Well, the bye week came at just the right time– we have lots of nagging injuries and will have time to heal up,” said Brown. “Coach Abreau (Taos) is a great coach and will have them ready to go for sure —they can run the ball and will be a challenge for us to stop their passing game as well.”
