GRANTS, N.M. – The Grants High School basketball teams are coming off a two-week closure due to COVID-19 protocols and are just starting to play their district schedule. Without practices the GHS Pirate basketball teams have been slow to regroup and started their district play slow. On Tuesday, January 25 the Pirates boys’ team hosted district rival the Valencia Jaguars (5-15, 0-3) and after a rusty low scoring start the Pirates were able to put that game in the “W” column. The final score was 41-38. “This was a vital game as Valencia had already fallen to 0-2 in district play---it was very close throughout and we had to pull out all of the stops to come out on top by 3 points,” said GHS head boys basketball coach Landon Chavez. On Friday, January 29th the Pirates traveled to Highland High School (14-3, 3-0) to play the number one team in the state, the Hornets easily controlled the tempo and handily defeated the Pirates by a score of 69-31 as the final buzzer went off. “Going into the game we knew it would be a tough task to face the number one ranked team in the state. They came out hot, shooting above 60% from the field. Although we forced three charges and played very well defensively, we struggled to score the basketball early,” said Chavez. The Pirates drop to 8-9 and 1-1. Looking ahead to next week the Pirates will play “ We will have our hands full with Belen ( game to be played on 2-1-22) as they lost a close game to Highland in overtime. Nonetheless, we are excited for the challenge, and ready get back in the win column.” The GHS lady Pirates played Valencia (13-7, 3-0) on January 25th and lost that game 49-39. On January 28th the lady Pirates played the Highland Hornets (12-5, 2-0) and lost that game 54-51 and are currently 5-13 and 0-2.
