“Turnovers, missed tackles—we had a couple of mistakes on special teams that cost us field position and ultimately–points,” said GHS Head Football Coach Brandon Hernandez of the Pirates district loss to the Valencia Jaguars(4-5, 2-0) last Thursday, October 20. The senior heavy Jaguars, who are ranked ninth in the most recent coaches’ poll, were a very present and physical team on the field that night. “Valencia’s top playmakers were all seniors–22—in contrast the vast majority of our production in all phases comes from underclassmen and a few upperclassmen,” said Hernadez. “That has been the story much of the year—-that’s ok—we knew that coming in–that it would be a process–and we’re committed to it.” The sole Pirate touchdown came late in the fourth quarter after a special team’s player, Cardenio Chavez, picked up a muffed punt by Valencia that allowed for a t one-yard touchdown by Douglas Mitchel a few plays later. The extra kick was good. Freshman quarterback Tristin Fernandez suffered a concussion before the half with backup quarterback Julian Padilla. Three other Pirates also suffered concussions, Sophomore Andres Lazos and freshmen DJ Chavez will be out for the next game. Senior Keegan Wilcox's status will be determined by gametime. Fernandez has been cleared and will return next week as quarterback. The Pirates will end their season this Thursday at 7:00pm on the road against the district rival the St. Pius Sartans (1-8, 02). In district 3/5 4A Silver City leads with an 8-1, 2-0 record followed by Valencia High School with a 4-5, 2-0 record. St. Pius is third and Grants High School is fourth.

The Pirates drop to 18, 2-0 as they prepare for the Sartans. “We are excited to get one more shot to compete with this group of guys,” said Hernandez of the upcoming game with St. Pius.
