The Pirates fresh off a scrimmage in Gallup last week and are preparing for Capital High School in the Pirates season home opener this Friday, August 18.

“The scrimmage was good – we were able to compete with four other teams and we were able to start making starting position assessments for all positions,” said Steve Brown GHS football head coach. “Although - some starting positions are still being tossed around by coaches—we feel pretty good about the guys that will be on the field at 7 p.m.

Brown shard a few key takeaways from the scrimmage. “We saw younger kids rise to the occasion of playing varsity level football---we also saw that there is much work still to be done to get us where we want to be,” said Brown.

Brown used 2 quarterbacks in the scrimmage, senior Julian Padilla and sophomore Deandre Chavez who both saw “significant” playing time and both did “very well’ at running the offense, “They have both developed into very good offensive leaders that the team will rally behind and go to battle for,” said Brown.

Brown had much praise for his team in general, “Football being a team game we are only as good as our weakest link and we are truly adopting the “We over Me” attitude,” said Brown.

On the topic of the Capital game Brown said, “Capital is going to be a tough opponent—as any 6A team would be – they have big and strong linemen inside and both sides of the ball – It’s going to be smashmouth football game for sure.” Brown added, “We put a lot of focus on conditioning this summer---to be prepared for these kind of games – literally the team that is physical and in shape will come out on top.”

Brown hopes for a good turnout this Friday in his season opener, “We hope to see a packed Port Friday and that fans come ready to get LOUD!”

Game time is slated for this Friday, August 18 at 7 p.m. at the Port of the Pirates. The Pirates lost to Capital last year 57-6 and finished the season with a 1-9, 0-3 record.
