The Pirates boys’ basketball team are on a 2game winning streak after defeating the Belen Eagles (8-14,1-4) by a score of 81-62 on February 2nd then defeating the Valencia Jaguars (11-12, 0-5) on their following game on February 9th by a score of 60-50.

“These last 2 games were extremely important as we navigate through districts and anticipate the state tournament,” said GHS boys basketball head coach Landon Chavez. “We had a tough matchup against Belen—we shot the ball extremely well and our defense was relentless.”

Double digit scorers in the Belen game for the Pirates were Noah Victorino with twenty-four points and Boudy Melonas with sixteen points.

The Pirates are a solid third in district 5 4-A after defeating the Valencia Jaguars who have lost their last four games and are currently 11-5, 0-5.

The Pirates narrowly defeated the Jags by three points in their first meetup at the beginning of district play.

“It was a tough battle— that was separated by only 1 point midway through the 3rd quarter— -the Pirates found a way to close the deal with that 60-50-point victory,” said Chavez of this second win over the Jags.

Double digit scorers for the Pirates were John “JJ” Horacek with fifteen points and Isaiah Griego with twelve points.

The Pirates are currently 15-8 and 3-2 in district play as they play the top ranked St. Pius Sartans on Tuesday, February 13th at home. The Sartans are 12-9, 4-1 and ranked second in the districts. “The first time around they jumped on a 14-0 start —they never looked back,” said Chavez “This game (Tuesday) will be vital to have a better start—-and completed against a top five team in the state.”

The lady Pirates basketball team is currently 4-18 and 1-4 and will play St. Pius (19-3, 5-0) on the road on Tuesday, February 13th.

The Laguna-Acoma girls basketball team 1-7 and 2-0 and their next game will be against Navajo Pine (2-20,0-2) on February 15th on the road. The L-A boys basketball team is currently 3-18 and 0-2 and will play Navajo Pine (10-11,0-1) as well on the 15th of February in an away game.
