Trojans Too Much for Hawks

“We had a lot of upsets [at the state tournament] and we weren’t one of them,” said Lacey Natseway of the Lady Hawks of Laguna-Acoma High School, an 8 seed, on losing to the number 1 seed, the Mesa Vista Trojans in the quarter finals at the Rio Rancho Events Center.

The Hawks lost by a score of 74-36. The Lady Hawks struggled from the opening quarter where they were down 19-8 and were down 43-21 at the half. “Our press breaker was not working well, we drew it up again—-trying to work on the mental game,” said Nastseway during the half time talk.

The third quarter saw Mesa Vista score 19 points to the Hawks 8 points. “I was trying to get them more confident in themselves–we didn’t have very many people shoot–I tried to get them to come back,” said Natseway. “They are all talented players but once they hit that mental block it’s hard to get them back.”

Natseway added that she added the bench in the end to give them “experience” and be “ready for it.

“We had a lot of pressure as we were the 8 seed and we played the 1 seed– we have a lot of potential,” said Gianna Carrillo of the game with a glimpse of next year.

The Hawks, who ended the season with an 18-10, 5-1 record will not lose any seniors and will be working hard this summer in preparation for next season according to Coach Natseway.
