ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After spending much of the early season finding consistency with a roster that featured significant offseason changes, New Mexico United appears to be hitting its stride as summer arrives.
The Black & Yellow enter July riding a fourmatch unbeaten streak in USL Championship play and sitting among the top five teams in the Western Conference following a hard-fought 1-0 road victory over Sacramento Republic FC on June 20.
The result was one of United's most impressive defensive performances of the season. Facing one of the Western Conference's perennial contenders, New Mexico weathered an early Sacramento attack behind a standout night from goalkeeper Kris Shakes.
Shakes made several key saves in the opening half, including stops against Memo Rodriguez, Jack Gurr and Forster Ajago to keep the match scoreless. Sacramento controlled much of the early action, but United gradually grew into the contest and began creating chances of its own after halftime.
Chris Gloster nearly opened the scoring when his effort was cleared off the goal line, while Greg Hurst was denied on a follow- up attempt during a sustained spell of pressure.
The breakthrough finally came in the 73rd minute.
Forward Dayonn Harris spotted Sacramento goalkeeper Danny Vitiello off his line and launched a remarkable shot from nearly 40 yards out. The ball sailed over the goalkeeper and bounced into the net, giving United the lead and ultimately the victory.
The goal continued a strong season for Harris, who has repeatedly delivered in key moments for New Mexico.
The victory also highlighted the continued development of a squad that underwent significant changes following last year's historic run to the Western Conference Final. While longtime fixtures such as Alex Tambakis and Talen Maples departed during the offseason, newcomers including Niall Reid-Stephen, Sofiane Djeffal, Raiko Arozarena, Maliek Howell and others have helped reshape the roster.
At the same time, returning leaders such as Harris, Greg Hurst, Valentin Noël, Chris Gloster, Ousman Jabang, Gedion Zelalem and Kipp Keller have provided stability as the club continues building toward another playoff push.
Head Coach Dennis Sanchez has emphasized throughout the season that chemistry and relationships take time to develop. Recent performances suggest those pieces are beginning to come together.
The four-match unbeaten streak has helped United climb the Western Conference standings while also building confidence ahead of one of the club's most anticipated home matches of the year.
United returns to Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park on July 4 to host Oakland Roots SC in a holiday matchup expected to draw one of the season's largest crowds.
As part of the celebration, the club recently unveiled its new 'Bottle Rocket Kit,' a special red, white and blue uniform that will be worn exclusively for the Independence Day match.
'Fast, loud and impossible to miss, the 'Bottle Rocket' Kit is a tribute to summer nights, pickup games and the kind of memories made in the middle of summer,' New Mexico United Director of Consumer Products Justin De La Rosa said in a statement. 'It is loud, bright and impossible to ignore just like New Mexico.'
The July 4 match will also feature a pregame fan fest with local vendors, food trucks and a community blood drive before kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
After reaching the Western Conference Final in 2025, expectations remain high in Albuquerque.
While there is still plenty of soccer left to be played, United enters the heart of the summer schedule looking increasingly like a team capable of making another deep postseason run.
