“We may be young, but everyone has bought into the culture of unselfishness, discipline, and relentless effort,” said lead Grants High School Boys’ Basketball Coach Landon Chavez of this year’s varsity squad. “We are going to shock some people this year with our young core.” Chavez, in his second year as head coach, focused on skill development and fundamentals during the preseason.

The Pirates field one senior, five juniors, five sophomores, and two freshmen on the team. They lost eight seniors to graduation last year. “We are young but very quick and explosive,” said Chavez “We have some young talent that can score the ball, get out in transition and capitalize on our [speed] – we will look to press other teams to take advantage of our

The Pirates recently went 3-0 in a scrimmage session where they defeated Tohatchi’s High School 1916, NACA High School 320 and Rehoboth 25-19. “This is such a positive to lead up to our first game,” said Chavez.

The Pirates season will begin on Tuesday, November 22 at home with a game against Bloomfield Bobcats followed by a road trip to Taos High School on Friday, December 2 after the Thanksgiving Break. “We look to start off with a clean slate and set the tone early with defense,” said Chavez of the upcoming Bloomfield game.

Next week we will look at the Lady Pirates preseason. They will begin play on Tuesday, November 22 in an away game against Bloomfield High School.
