GRANTS, N.M. – A new Route 66-themed mural is taking shape on Santa Fe Avenue as Grants MainStreet Project continues its public art efforts in downtown Grants.

Work on the mural was underway throughout the week, with artist Nazario returning to paint a large piece that highlights Route 66 imagery tied to the spirit, history and culture of Grants. The mural includes recognizable visual elements connected to the area’s identity, including vintage automotive and roadside themes associated with the Mother Road.

In a public statement, Grants MainStreet said it is excited to see the new mural come to life and described it as another addition to the city’s growing public art movement.

The organization encouraged residents to stop by and watch the progress as the mural develops.

The project adds to a series of visible efforts aimed at strengthening the look and feel of downtown Grants while reinforcing the city’s connection to Route 66. Public art has become one of the ways local organizations are trying to bring fresh energy to Santa Fe Avenue and create spaces that reflect the character of the community.

Painting was visible on multiple days last few week, with work continuing as the mural is gradually filled in along the wall.
