Arrest Made in Homicide Case After Months-Long Investigation

CIBOLA COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with the homicide case of Jesse Gray, a prominent figure in the southern Cibola community. The arrest comes after a four-month-long investigation that involved multiple search warrants and collaboration with the 13th District Attorney's office.

On May 24 of this year, authorities responded to the Jesse Gray residence in southern Cibola County, where Gray had been declared missing for several days. She was discovered locked inside a small shed and had succumbed to blunt force trauma. The investigation initially focused on three individuals with opportunity, motive, and presence at the time of the murder.

According to CCSO Lieutenant Robert Turney, the investigation progressed thanks to crucial information which came to light through a confidential source, leading authorities to refocus their attention on one of the original suspects. The suspect was identified as Willie Marshall, a neighbor of the victim. After obtaining an arrest warrant for Marshall, detec- tives executed multiple search warrants, resulting in the recovery of what Turney called “essential items” that had not been processed into evidence at the time of the interview.

According to Sheriff Diaz, motives for the crime appeared to include a dispute over a dog, specifically a purebred blue heeler owned by the victim. According to CCSO, Gray had been attempting to sell these purebred puppies, and an incident involving another dog that disrupted the gene pool may have fueled tensions between Marshall and Gray. Additionally, law enforcement believed Gray was trying to identify Marshall as a suspect in local burglaries, which police allege eventually led to a confrontation last fall.

Deputies said that despite the challenges and personal sacrifices faced by the investigative team, the arrest of Marshall was executed “flawlessly” without the use of force or resistance during a traffic stop on September 11, as he was leaving Fence Lake. Further details emerged during the execution of search warrants which CCSO is currently processing.

This case represents one of three homicides in the region this year, all of which have now been resolved, with two suspects remanded to remain in jail and one free on conditions of release. Community meetings have been held to reassure residents of their safety, with additional resources dedicated to improving the situation. Policy changes have been made within the Cibola County Sheriff's Office, including the addition of more personnel, to enhance their capacity to handle such cases independently.

Undersheriff Jeff Marez highlighted the positive impact of these efforts, reporting improved response times, a decrease in crime, and a notable shift in community engament with offiers in the southern part of the county. The focus on improving safety has led to a significant reduction in burglaries in the area, according to Turney.

The arrest in the Gray homicide case marks a significant development in an exhaustive investigation that, according to Sheriff Diaz, showcased the dedication and professionalism of law enforcement in Cibola County. The case now awaits further proceedings in the district court as a hearing has yet to be scheduled.
