SANTA FE, NM – New Mexico State Parks, part of the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, announced the postponement of the highly anticipated public hearing on park fee adjustments initially scheduled for April 1, 2024. This decision comes as the division aims to undertake a “thorough” review of over 800 public comments and feedback received on the proposed fee increases, according to a press release from the NMEMNRD.

The announcement was made following a series of statewide informational meetings designed to engage with park users and gather their input on the proposed changes to the park entry fees. These meetings, which took place across various locations, have provided the division with a wealth of perspectives on the future of park funding and access.

Toby Velasquez, the State Parks Division Director, emphasized the value of public engagement in the decision-making process. 'We traveled statewide to engage with our valued customers and understand their viewpoints. With over 800 public comments in hand, it’s clear that there’s a consensus for enhancing our fee structure. These insights will greatly enrich our revision process,” Velasquez said.

The initial proposal, as outlined in the division's FAQ, aimed at addressing the financial sustainability of the parks, enhancing equitable access for New Mexico residents, and updating fees that have remained unchanged for decades. Among the considered changes were increases in park fees to cover operational costs, the elimination of the Day Use Fee for New Mexico residents to promote equal access, and adjustments to motorboat registration fees to support boating safety and infrastructure.

The postponement allows the State Parks Division to delve deeper into the public feedback, which will play a crucial role in refining the proposed fee adjustments. The new date for the public hearing, where these revisions will be presented, is yet to be announced. Meanwhile, the division continues to welcome public comments on the proposed changes through March 29, 2024, demonstrating its commitment to transparency and public involvement in the decision-making process.

NMEMNRD review and revision of the proposed fee changes continues, the State Parks Division is poised to present its recommendations through a rule revision process. This next phase will include additional public meetings and another period for public comment, ensuring that the voices of New Mexico residents and park users are heard and considered in shaping the future of state park funding and access.
