New Mexico Author to Embark on Epic 38,000-Mile Pan-American Journey in Vintage 1952 Chrysler New Yorker.
THOREAU, N.M. — While most people look at a 74-year-old classic car and see a museum piece, Thoreau resident and author Wesley J. Allen sees a vessel for an adventure of a lifetime. On May 1, 2027, Allen will slip into his 1952 Chrysler New Yorker and embark on a grueling, self-funded 38,000-mile odyssey spanning two continents.
Starting from the geographic midpoint of the legendary Pan-American Highway in Thoreau, New Mexico, Allen will drive south to the literal 'end of the world' in Ushuaia, Argentina. From there, he will reverse course and drive all the way north to the edge of the Arctic Ocean in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, before finally returning home to Thoreau, New Mexico.
The six-month journey will be a true test of vintage American engineering. Allen’s mobile home for the duration of the trip will be a classic camping trailer pulled by the Chrysler.
'Nothing can stop me now,' says Allen. 'Whether I raise the full funds or not, I am hitting the road on May 1st, 2027. This trip is about proving what is possible with determination and a legendary piece of American automotive history.'
