Fall Colors Arrive in Cibola County -

Body

Diego Lopez, Editor CIBOLA COUNTY — Leaf-peeping season is officially here.

As of Sept. 29, pockets of moderate color are showing in the Zuni Mountains west of Grants and in a few high-country patches north of the I-40 corridor, with low color spreading across most of the county. Expect aspens and oaks to turn first at elevation through early October, followed by cottonwoods along the San José and Bluewater valleys later in the month.

Forest officials urge visitors to enjoy the show safely. Canyon drives such as NM-547 (Lobo Canyon Road) toward Mt. Taylor are narrow and winding; beyond the pavement, some forest roads are rough and may require high-clearance vehicles. Trailhead parking fills quickly—park only in marked spaces and keep access lanes clear. Weather can swing fast at elevation, cell service is unreliable, and wildlife is active. Pack layers, water, a paper map, and give yourself extra time.

If you’re exploring the Zunis, dust and visibility can become an issue on busy weekends; slow speeds and driver courtesy make the experience better for everyone. County burn bans do not restrict sightseeing, but always follow posted signs and avoid any open flame.

Before you go, check site status and conditions with the Mt. Taylor Ranger District (1800 Lobo Canyon Rd., Grants | 505-287-8833) and review “Know Before You Go” basics at fs.usda.gov/visit/knowyou- go.
