GRANTS, N.M. – Students at St. Teresa Catholic School were evacuated to a safe location Monday morning after lightning reportedly struck a utility pole between the school and St. Teresa Church, causing a transformer fire and power outage.

The incident was reported at approximately 11:24 a.m. Sept. 14 as heavy rain and thunderstorms moved through Grants. No injuries were reported, and the Grants Police Department said there was no active threat to students. The school notified parents, while telephone service to the parish office was temporarily disrupted.

Grants Fire and Rescue, Grants police and Continental Divide Electric Cooperative responded. CDEC crews worked into the night to restore power near the school and church following the storm.
