GRANTS, N.M. - A couple of weeks ago, my wife Evelyn and I were reminiscing about our last February’s “Sharing Hearts and Touching Lives” Valentine’s Day card idea and of the joy it brought to both the community and the children involved. We smiled as we talked of the hearts and lives that were touched by it.
Evelyn contacted the five local elementary schools to see if they would like to participate again, as we would like to pick up the cards by Feb. 10th to disperse them in time for Valentine’s Day. The Valentine cards will go to local hospital patients and nursing homes and realizing some may not have family, this is a great way to share the simple love from a child. We will also include local law enforcement and fire departments and home health care providers.
Some schools had children already crafting Valentine cards in their classrooms. We asked for simple flat heart shapes on red construction paper with perhaps a note of kindness on the card.
We were pleasantly surprised when we picked them up last Tuesday, that there were over 600 cards total combined from local elementary schools, including: Mt. Taylor, San Rafael, Bluewater, Mesa View, and Milan Elementary and this year we welcomed St. Theresa Catholic School’s participation. There are cards with robots with heart shapes on their bodies. There are bright red heart shaped cards as well. They are children’s art, handcrafted in the spirit of love to touch the heart of the recipient.
There are notes attached for the recipient, including: “Be my valentine”, or “I love you”, or “Have a nice day”, “Thank you for your service” and a few reminders that “Jesus loves you”.
Isn’t this nice? ”Sharing Hearts and Touching Lives”?
Happy Valentine’s Day!
