CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. - San Rafael Elementary students get an up-close introduction to a camel during the U.S. Camel Corps Commemoration at El Morro National Monument Sept. 12-13.
Students learned about the U.S. Army’s 19th-century experiment using camels for transportation and exploration across the Southwest, as well as the different adaptations that made camels, horses, mules and oxen suited for travel and work in the region. The annual National Park Service event commemorates the 1857 camel expedition that passed El Morro on its journey west and gives local students a chance to experience a unique piece of New Mexico history beyond the classroom.
