It’s for the community

Dear Editor:

We had a community barbeque this past Saturday in Bluewater Village. The food was great and so was the company! We heard talks from Paul Spencer, myself, Matt Allen from Mt. Taylor Millworks, and Bluewater Elementary School Principal Miller. There was plenty of discussion concerning the building of the new Bluewater Elementary School. The plan for this new school, that was approved and funded for, was to be 24,000 square feet. The School Board decided to cut the square footage to 20,000 because of the increase in building materials. State Representative Harry Garcia got some more money for this project so that the original plan could be left in place. In spite of this extra money, the School Board seems to want to continue with their plans to build a smaller new school for the community of Bluewater Village. The residents of Bluewater Village made it clear they are not happy with this turn of events.

The local School Board seems to have a difficult time listening to the residents. When you consider what has happened to our Grants High School Junior Marine Corp ROTC program and how they have been treated like an ugly stepchild in the last few years, it is not a stretch of the imagination that this School Board will do exactly what they want to.

Because Representative Garcia brought more money to the Bluewater School building project, I believe that the School Board should stick to the original plan and build this school to the original plan and scope that included 24,000 square feet. As for the GHSJROTC program, the School Board would be well served to make it a priority to reinstate this valuable program and show it the respect that our whole community feels for it. How I miss the cadet's presence at every important function presenting the colors of our great nation.

I am encouraged that Alesha Lundstrom stepped up to run for the School Board seat in District 2! No one should ever run unopposed. Thank you, Representative Garcia, for bringing money into our area for special projects.
