Letters to the Editor . . .

Body

Dear Editor, Lately, after a recent experience, I've wondered how often we are not truthful with ourselves. This is a topic I have rarely heard addressed regarding honesty. There is awareness of the general topic of self deception. But specifically, verbalizing to ourselves untruthfully is a topic that has been largely ignored.

I became aware of this recently when I was telling myself I hadn't done anything wrong, when I was trying to feel good about something I had done that, though relatively minor, was not truthful. After making excuses to myself, I said, stop it, you are lying.

I had also wondered if the people around Biden who insisted he was in great shape were lying to themselves. Later, I heard one of my favorite podcasters say that very thing, that he believes self deception was a big part of the lies regarding Biden's mental health. That dishonesty had a drastic consequence for Democrats.

Awareness of lying to oneself as a fairly common occurrence can help us be more truthful with ourselves. I've always thought that if we lie, we are adding to the accumulation of dishonesty in the world which makes it harder for people to trust. And trust is important for a healthy community.

For anyone interested in improving self-awareness, there is always counseling. For those who cannot afford counseling, there is literature online that can be helpful. A decision to reflect on our motives for thinking or doing something can add to the honesty and subsequent trust in the world, a slow and tedious effort but one I believe is worth pursuing.

Rain is a Blessing; Clean Yards, too!

Dear editor, The rain we have been receiving has been a great blessing to this dry and thirsty land! It comes at a very busy time of the year as far as community activities go! The City of Grants has had a Carnival this past weekend and is sponsoring a huge 'Spokes On 66 Car Show' on June 6&7. So far, there is over a hundred cars of all kinds signed up for this fun event! The weather report looks good for this successful car show!

However, with the blessing that rain brings, weeds are soon to follow! Please remember to keep your weeds and grasses cut down to 3' in your yards to the curb around your property. Weeds in New Mexico grow very fast when there is moisture and it is important to stay on top of them. Now is a very good time to clean up all the junk, trash and weeds you may have in your yard. By doing so, you show your pride in Grants. It also encourages your neighbors to do better on their yards.

If you have a neighbor that is struggling to clean their yard, don't be afraid to reach out and give them a little help. I come across elderly and disabled residents that need help from time to time. They always appreciate any assistance and that is one of the most important things about being a good neighbor.

The City of Grants employees work very hard to keep the medians and streets clean. We also have community service workers that are cleaning up trash and beautifying the city constantly. I want to personally thank everyone I see picking up trash while they are walking! Cleaner cities are always safer cities and economic blessings follow.
