The Grants High School football team lost an away game this past week against district rival, the Academy Chargers (8-1) the final score was 48-0.

“We truly played the best football of the season in the first quarter of the Academy game. Defense had a couple of great series, and offense moved the ball well,” said GHS head football coach Brandon Hernandez. “We understand that in order to win ball games, you need to play four complete quarters of football. We believe we will get there.”

The Pirates gave the Charges a good run for their money as they held them to 0 points in the first quarter, however, after that quarter, Academy was in the driver’s seat as five players scored touchdowns and 1 player scored

2 touchdowns before the night was over. The Pirates, shorthanded 3 key offensive players, managed to score two touchdowns in the first half; however, they were called back.

This week is homecoming week at GHS and the Pirates will host district rival, the St. Pius Sartans who are currently at the top of the district (4A-5) with a record (6-2, 2-0) coming into this Saturday’s game.

“St. Pius has gotten stronger and more impressive as the season continues. We know that ‘gang tackling’ Marco Ybarra is a must this week. He is a big, strong, and fast running back,” said Hernandez of the upcoming game. “We've got to be assignment sound and fly to the football to be successful on defense this week. Offensively, we're really excited to get some much needed weapons back on the field. We went into our last game down our top three receivers, so having at least two of them back will be huge.”

The homecoming game is slated for 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Port of the Pirates. There will also be a drive through parade and carnival at the football field parking lot starting at 3 pm.
