GRANTS N.M. - Who is Tyler Everhart? Everhart, a senior, is the new Grants High School football quarterback. Everhart who is 6’ 2” and comes in at 190 lbs. is ready to “row the boats” a motto the team has adapted, and leads the young football team this upcoming season.

Everhart, who was a receiver for the Pirates last year, succeeds Brandon Furbee who moved on to Farmington High School over the summer.

“I’m ready to be in the quarterback position and lead the team,” said Everhart. “My goal is to help my team develop and move forward this season.”

Everhart is not totally new to the position as he did play quarterback in his youth teams before his high school career. He and a handful of seniors will lead a young Pirate team who also fields a new coach, Brandon Hernandez. “We did an adjustment to coach Hernandez and we have been working hard over the summer and continue now with the school year starting—we are starting to make connections,” said Everhart.

Everhart understands the trials with working with a young team and the “ups and downs” are part of the game. “With reps and game play we will build our confidence,” said Everhart

“Tyler is the best athlete all around and we want to see the ball in his hands,” said head coach Hernandez of him and his staff selecting Everhart as the quarterback.

Everhart has his personal goals aligned with the teams as he wants to “move forward” and “improve” with every game and practice. “I want to get through the good, the bad and the ugly as a team,” said Everhart.

Everhart started prepping for the football season early, even before he was selected as the new quarterback; he attended two football summer camps. One camp, in Arlington Texas, he worked with skills coach at a variety of positions and even caught three touchdown passes during a scrimmage. The second camp was in El Paso, Texas which covered offensive and defensive skills training. “I learned a lot this summer,” said Everhart.

Everhart believes he is a “committed student” when not involved with athletics. He enjoys broad support from his family in achieving his goals and enjoys vacations to California with his family.

Everhart and his teammates completed a scrimmage in Santa Fe last week where they saw Capital High School, whom they play this Friday, and he feels they can compete with them this Friday in the Pirates first home game. “We are both young teams and we have been practicing hard. We should have a good shot to win,” said Everhart.

The Pirates will row their first boat as they will host the Capital Jaguars at the Port of the Pirates this Friday at 7 p.m. In a side note, the bleachers are torn down and limited seating will be available to fans.
