CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. - The GHS boys’ basketball team was one and done in the first round of the district 5 4-A basketball tournament this past Tuesday, February 22, after a 61-43-point loss the Belen Eagles. Turnovers and scoring droughts hindered the Pirates in what was to be their last game of the year. The Pirates had a lackluster start as they trailed Belen by a score of 23-5 in the first quarter.

Belen used a press to stymie the Pirates passing game, as well the Pirates shooting drought prevented them from getting on the board early. In the second quarter the Pirates managed to outscore the Eagles by five points, however, they trailed the Eagles by a score of 28-19. Belen came out of the gate hot in the third quarter and scored 21 points to the Pirates nine points setting pace for the finale.

The Pirates rallied in the fourth quarter and scored 17 points to Belen’s 10 points—not enough to make a difference in the end—the final score was 61-43.

The Pirates ended their season with a 9-15 overall record and 2-6 district record and will lose nine seniors.
