GRANTS, N.M. – The Grants High School boys basketball team is 6-3 as they head into the Christmas break after a 68-45 win over the Shiprock Chieftains this past Wednesday, December 22nd. The Pirates who made their third road trip to the four corners, started out cold as they trailed the Chieftains 14-11 in the first quarter. They later rebounded to take the lead at the half, 30-21. “Shiprock got out to an early lead—we went on a run to take the lead before the half and never looked back,” said GHS head coach Landon Chavez. “It was a good game to gain confidence and look forward to the second half of our season—knowing we have some tough opponents coming up.”

The Pirates led 42-39 at the end of the third quarter and finished the game with a 23-point win to garner their sixth win of the season and third win in a row. The Pirates will have a week off before taking on tough 6-2 Taos Tigers team on Monday, January 3 at home. “We look forward to our game against Taos —they come in with a 6-2 record and a convincing 31-point win with Bernalillo,” said coach Chavez. “This can be a huge statement game at home to start off the new year.”

The Lady Pirates basketball team are also on the road to the opposite end of the state as they travel to Hobbs High School to participate in the Hobbs Holiday Classic. The Lady Pirates lost to the Farmington Scorpions this past Monday, December 27 by a score of 75-33.

“They (Farmington) are a solid basketball team, our plan was to have man to man defense and to close out their drives and shooters—-they were able to capitalize on their offense,” said GHS lady Pirate basketball head coach Douglas “Dougie” Hickman. The lady Pirates played in a second game on Tuesday, December 28th against El Dorado High School from El Paso, Texas and lost that game by a score of 56-47.
