The Pirates had an injury laden game which made the contest more challenging, as they lost to the second ranked Bloomfield Bobcats 52-0 in a home game last Friday.

“We had a couple of key injuries that led to younger, more inexperienced athletes seeing the field,” said GHS Head Football Coach Brandon Hernandez after Friday’s loss. “We need to develop depth on multiple positions on our team – we will absolutely make depth a priority in the coming weeks,” said a reflective Hernandez of his team.

The Bobcats wasted no time under the Friday night lights as they ran a 77-yard kick return for a touchdown to make the score 6-0. With 10 minutes to go the Bobcats intercepted a pass from GHS quarterback Tyler Everhart which they converted into a touchdown by Diego Snell-Martinez for a 13-0 lead after the second extra point attempt was good.

With the first quarter well underway, Senior Quarterback Tyler Everhart was injured, and backup Quarterback Matthew Valdo, a senior, stepped in. However, Valdo was nursing previous injuries and after a few reps was replaced by sophomore Alfonso “A.J” Kester.

“I went down in the first quarter, it was my hamstring,” said senior quarterback Tyler Everhart of his injury.

With just under 11 minutes left in the second quarter, Bloomfield’s quarterback Ryan Sharpe found Marc Armenta for a 26- yard Bobcat touchdown. The extra point attempt was good, making the score 20- 0. With seven minutes to go, the Bobcats had a rushing touchdown off a 16- yard run by Jesse Seitinger to make the score 26-0. Moments after that touchdown, Sharpe found Armenta for a long pass and touchdown to make the score 33-0 after the successful extra point was added. A Pirate fumble with four minutes to go allowed Bloomfield’s Snell-Martinez to rush in for a 16-yard touchdown to make the score 39-0

The Pirates held their own until the middle of the third quarter when Shane Slaugh rushed two yards for a touchdown to make it,46-0 after the extra point. In the fourth quarter, with eleven minutes remaining on the clock, Bloomfield scored their last touchdown of the night to make the final score 52-0.

Next up for the Pirates are five away games starting with the Moriarity Pintos (0-2) this upcoming Friday.

“We are excited to make the trip to Moriarty and compete! They've been running the same system for years, and for good reason - and it works. We will need to be alignment and assignment sound defensively. Offensively, we need to protect the ball, eliminate turnovers, and execute,” said Hernandez of that upcoming game.
