KIRKLAND, N.M. - The Grants High School Pirates football team dropped a tough game on the road to the Kirtland Central by a score of 63-14.

“We had a pretty good week of practice, but when the lights came on, things went south,” said GHS head coach Brandon Hernandez. “Right now, many of our mistakes are self-inflicted. We gave up two pick sixes’, we had two fumbled snaps on punt, and I can go on.”

However, it was not all doom and gloom as the Pirates were able to put two scores, first a 65-yard touchdown from senior quarterback Tyler Everhart to sophomore receiver Knight Long for a touchdown.

“It was on rhythm, he caught it in stride and took off,” said Everhart of that pass.

In third quarter, a short pass from Everhart to senior Willam Archuleta led to a 15-yard touchdown.

“I was able to get away from the defenders and drive through for a touchdown,” said Archuleta. On another bright note, Noah Lundstrom, a freshman, was able to kick the ball twice for the extra points after the touchdowns. The Pirates of recent had struggled putting up the extrapoint attempts.

“We have to, and we will, learn how to win,” added Hernandez as he summed up the game and discussed the upcoming game.

Next up for the Pirates will be the Valencia Jaguars (4-2) in an away game, Friday, October 1. “We know that Valencia is a tough and talented team. We feel that we need to learn how to win. We have to learn how to take care of the ball, and stay out of our own way,” said Hernadez.

Late in to the Kirtland Central game freshman receiver Andres Lazos was hit hard and will be out with a concussion for the Valencia game.
