The Pirates slugged their way this season to an 18-8, 6-2 record that allowed them to garner a fourth seed in the New Mexico Activates Association state baseball tournament. They will host the Bloomfield Bobcats (14-11, 5-5) this weekend, starting Friday, May 6 at 5 pm.

“It’s hard work, and that hard work got us here,” said Grants High School Head Baseball Coach Walter Sarracino. “I’m pretty happy with the fourth seed.”

The Pirates, earlier in the season, played a double-header and defeated the Bobcats by a score of 11-7 and 14-3 back on April 2. “We have to prepare for Bloomfield – [Everbody] is there for a reason in the tournament,” said Sarracino of the upcoming rematch with Bloomfield.

The Bobcats were third in district 1 just behind Aztec (9-1) and Miyamura (8-2), they split in their last two games: A 5- 2 win over Miyamura on April 26 and 6-5 loss to Kirtland Central April 28. The Pirates most recent game was last Friday, when they ably defeated district rival, the Belen Eagles, by a score of 12- 2.

“We can’t afford any mistakes – Bloomfield is a good team,” said Sarracino as the Pirates practice this week for what could be a total of three games. “We need to play mistake free baseball – that is what will make the difference in the outcome.”

The Pirates were second in their district just behind St. Pius (18-4, 7-1) who received the number two seed and will play Ruidoso High School (11- 10, 5-4).
