Spring Sports Swinging into District Play

The Ides of March have just passed us, and with that, Spring sports teams launch into district play. The Grants High School boys’ baseball team (10-6), is ranked sixth in class 4-A in the MaxPreps standings and is second in the district just behind the St. Pius Spartans (8-4) as they start their district play this week.

On Tuesday, March 29 they will play the winless Highland Hornets (0-12) as they start their district run. “We’re happy to be where we are at, and we are going to have a busy week,” said GHS Baseball Head Coach Walter Sarracino as he reflected on his current standing.

The Pirates recently went 1-2 in their last three games. They defeated the Miyamura Patriots by a score of 8-3 on Wednesday, March 23. Mauricio Chavez and Nick Bustos pitched in that game and Bustos also had three hits in that contest. The Pirates score four runs in the second inning and one run in each inning after that through the sixth inning to come out ahead at the end of 7 innings.

On Saturday, March 26, the Pirates lost both double-header games to the Kirtland Central Broncos (8-5). The scores in those games were 4-1 and 5-4. In that first game the Broncos scored one run in the first and three runs in the second inning for their four runs. The Pirates managed one run by Senior Tyler Everhart for their sole run of the game. In the second game, the Pirates manages 10 hits and four RBI’s, however, they came up one run short at the end of 7 innings.

“We slipped and overlooked KC – we had handled them pretty good last time we played them, we can’t overlook teams,” said Sarracino. “We still have some work to do.” The district 5 4-A standing are as follows: St. Pius High School. 804, Grants High School 10-6, Belen High School 8-6, Valencia High School 7-7, and highland High School at 0-11-1.

Lady Pirate Softball

The Lady Pirates Softball team is currently 2-9 and went 1-1 last week after losing to Miyamura on Tuesday, March 22 by a scoreless 18-0 loss.

They then went on to defeat the Lady Knights of Del Norte by a score of 27-15 on Thursday, March 24. The Lady Pirates scored 10 runs in the first inning and nine runs in the seventh inning for their lion’s share of runs.

Next up for the Lady Pirates is an away game to play the Lady Hornets of Highland High School (0- 10) to start their district play.

The district 5 4-A standings are as follows, St. Pius High School at 10-4, Belen High School at 6-9, Valencia High School at 3-9 and the Lady Pirates at 2-9 and Highland High School at 0-10.
