Red Ribbon Week Celebrated in Cibola

Students and teachers are working hard this week to highlight the dangers of drug use. Grants-Cibola County Schools is joining the nationwide Red Ribbon Week to help keep youth off of drugs.

Illegal Trapper Arrested

MILAN, N.M. – Milan man Zacharia Copeland, 22, has been charged with Trapping Without a License. The charge came after Copeland posted a Facebook photo of a badger he had shot. Investigators found the photo, and on October 19 they filed a criminal complaint against Copeland.

Missing Men Last Seen in Cibola

Two men have gone missing in Cibola County, New Mexico. One man, Stephen Keohane, is missing from Fence Lake and was last seen on October 16. The other missing man is Gregory Bass, the semi-truck driver was last seen walking Interstate 40 between Gallup and Grants on October 24.
Cibola County’s drought conditions have widely improved from even a month ago. Thanks to significant rainfall, the dangerous effects of Cibola’s drought are lowering. As of October 18, only 15.8 percent of Cibola is in moderate drought and 0.95 percent is in severe drought, the rest of the county is not classified as in drought conditions, but is abnormally dry. Cibola Drought Monitor – October Update

Drought conditions across Cibola have seen significant improvement, going from a near-disaster point for the county in June, to only 0.95 percent of the county being classified as “in drought” as of October 18. Conditions are improving thanks to a large increase in moisture this year. 15.

Milan Fire Department held a physical activity course that area youth could go through and see if they were strong like firefighters. Youngsters had to go through the course where they could run on ramps, and could run around traffic cones while wearing parts of firefighter equipment.

MILAN, N.M. – According to the Western New Mexico Airway Heritage Museum in Milan, a significant part of New Mexico’s history comes from when the community was part of the Transcontinental Airways. In 1920, mail took about three days to cross the United States by train.
