Poetry to Honor Bataan Veterans

Editor’s Note: To honor Cibola’s veterans, Los Alamitos instructor Richie Ann Balgos had her students write poetry about the Bataan Death March, which is remembered annually on April 9. The following selection of essays was selected by Los Alamitos staff and written by local middle school students.

JAMES B. BARBER: World War Veteran

James B. Barber enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps (later it became a separate military branch) shortly after the Pearl Harbor Hawaii attack on December 7, 1941. At that time, he was the editor of the Raton Daily Range in Raton, NM.He served in the European Theater as a spotter pilot.

My Daddy was a Hero!

My Dad, General Ahniwake Ray joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 when he was 17 years old (his mother had to sign for him).He traveled from Quapaw, Oklahoma, to El Paso, Texas, to Los Angeles, California, then to San Diego, CA for Boot Camp.

Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Las Cruces Business for Allegedly Defrauding Veterans

Las Cruces, N.M. — New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez has filed a lawsuit against Disabled Veterans Consultants, Inc. (DVC), a Las Crucesbased company accused of illegally charging veterans for benefits consulting services that are available for free through federally accredited organizations.
