As 2023 Comes to a Close

I find it difficult to believe that we are arriving at the end of the year 2023. It has been a busy, non-stop year for the 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. As the year ends, I find it helpful to review our accomplishments and our challenges.

Well, some say Thanksgiving started with the Pilgrims. Some say it started with the Spanish in Texas and Florida. Afterwards, different States celebrated at different times. Surprisingly, it was Lincoln who declared the final Thursday in November as a national holiday.

There’s a lot of chatter about next year’s presidential election, and a lot of polls asking one group or another what opinion is current.

As NATO prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary in Washington next year, it does so from a position of remarkable unity and strength—a stark contrast to the mutual suspicion and uncertainty that clouded trans-Atlantic ties just a few years ago.

In America, we celebrate thanksgiving by watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, watching football, Black Friday shopping, and eating with family. We eat turkey, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, cornbread, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pies.

The Postscript

I have always liked Thanksgiving. I know its origins are dubious. I cringe a little when I think about the construction paper American Indian costumes and the happy story I learned as a child about that first Thanksgiving.
