Act IV

“Brushstrokes of Christmas magic” were applied to 91 local business windows two weeks ago by a total of eighty-seven local elementary school artists collectively. The fourth grade students from Mt. Taylor, Milan, Mesa View, San Rafael and Bluewater schools were accompanied by their teachers and teacher-aids on an assigned day to brighten Santa Fe Avenue and Milan’s Historic Route 66 business windows with holiday art raising our local communities Christmas spirits. The cold and breezy weather did not dampen their spirits; they buttoned jackets, pulled on hoods and gloves to leave their charm and personal touch including decorated Christmas trees, Santa’s, candycanes, wreaths, snowflakes, and drummer boys for our local citizens as well as travelers enjoyment. Local restaurants of Subway, Domino’s Pizza, Sonic Drive-in, along with Air Pros Heating and Cooling generously provided lunch for the artists. Math quizzes requiring the artists to figure the area of the windows painted were available for teachers to present their students for completion by use of new pencils from NMSU-Grants Branch, rounding off each day’s art and math event. The return to painting this year was a welcome treat to all after last year’s absence due to Coved. An addition to this year’s program includes paper Christmas art for Cibola General Hospital to brighten each patient’s room.

This is the fourth year the annual Grants Main Street event, originated and organized by Cibola citizens Roger and Evelyn Siegmann has been whole-heartedly received by our community. Donations from the event continue to support Main Street projects, with more than half the amount gifted to the local “Rotary Club Backpack Food for Kids” program.
