Cibola Water Monitoring Report

Body

Bluewater and Rio San Jose Data as of September 22, 2025

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – This report seeks to track the flow of water in Cibola County. Bluewater Lake and the Rio San Jose both have United States Geological Survey monitoring stations where this data is pulled from.

Bluewater Lake continues to draw down as the month progresses, holding 4,937 acre-feet of water as of 12:15 p.m. on September 22. That’s a decline of more than 40 acre-feet in the past week and over 1,100 acre-feet since mid-August. The steady drop mirrors seasonal patterns, though boating conditions remain listed as “excellent” by New Mexico State Parks.

The Rio San Jose measured 1.92 feet on the morning of September 22, down slightly from 1.93 feet recorded September 16. The river’s gradual decline shows the effects of drought across Cibola County, where limited rainfall has offered only short-lived relief.

Both reservoir and river levels remain well below springtime highs, emphasizing the importance of continued monitoring and conservation as fall begins.
