The municipal golf course sits on 240 acres of stunning scenery. Although winter has slowed play time due to colder weather and loss of daylight, there are still enthusiasts willing to come out and enjoy a round of golf.

A diverse range of people come to play at Coyote Del Malpais. Throughout the year you can find retirees, high school golf clubs, and people coming from different communities, states, and other countries coming to enjoy the beautiful surroundings as they play golf. Recently, Aztec High School played their tournament at Coyote Del Malpais instead of in Farmington.

General Manager Kim Garduno stated the golf course receives a lot of people just passing through on I-40. There are billboards advertising the golf course in both directions and travelers like to take a break and enjoy a game of golf and see the surrounding area. Garduno stated one of the biggest customers is Harvest Host Campers – a membership program that invites self-contained RVers to various states to visit scenic locations; a majority of these members are avid golf players who enjoy playing on different courses.

Maintenance of the golf course is a daily adventure. Every day the course must be maintained to regulations and this involves five different cuts on the course – greens, roughs, tees, fairways, and hazards. Watering is also a daily routine in the summer and once a week in the winter to keep the course grass properly maintained. The golf course uses reclaimed sewer water that is cleaned and sent back to water the course. Garduno stated this process is the whole reason for the existence of the course; the wastewater treatment facility is behind the golf course.

Garduno has spent 18 years working at the golf course and the last five as general manager. She pointed out that Coyote Del Malpais is more than just a golf course. Throughout the year, various activities take place at the course. 4-H holds its annual summer 3D Archery Shoot in July. The city’s Fourth of July fireworks display is launched from the course and the Haunted Course for kids happens in October.

There is also a restaurant and full bar that is open to the public. Coyote Del Malpais also rents out a large room for parties. It is a great place to hold a retirement, birthday, or office party.

If you want to play golf but lack the equipment, club and cart rentals are also available for use. There are four members of maintenance and four who work the front. During the summer season, the golf course hires a lot of part-time seasonal help.

This is a place you can reserve for parties, enjoy some food, have a drink, play some golf, or do all the above.
