MILAN, NM – The long-anticipated renovation of the Milan swimming pool has encountered significant hurdles, delaying progress and increasing costs. Initially envisioned as a remodel focused on upgrading locker rooms, showers, and ensuring compliance with modern ADA standards, the project has revealed deeper structural issues during construction.
At the Coffee with the Managers meeting on December 5, Village of Milan Manager CandyWilliams explained that moisture damage over the years has compromised parts of the building, requiring additional fire safety upgrades, including the installation of a sprinkler system.
“When you start a remodel on an older building, you don’t always know what you’re going to find,” Williams said. “What we found were code violations that require a full rebuild of the front portion of the facility.”
These unforeseen complications have created a funding shortfall of approximately $2.5 million. Despite this setback, Williams emphasized the importance of completing the project comprehensively rather than opting for temporary fixes.
“If we can get this done all at once, it will last another 20 years. That’s the goal,” she added.
While the delays are frustrating, there is good news. The pool's main structure remains in excellent condition, and officials recognize its vital role as a community resource. The village is actively pursuing additional funding sources and exploring options to reopen the pool as soon as possible.
For now, the focus remains on securing the necessary financial support to complete the renovation and ensure the Milan swimming pool continues to serve the community for years to come.
