CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – Cibola National Forest and Grasslands is under a Stage 1 Fire Restrictions because of abnormally dry conditions.

“Preparation and safety are of utmost importance while recreating in the national forest. Please observe safety alerts and notices before your excursion to the forest. Simply knowing the current conditions, closures and alerts prepares you for a pleasurable outdoor visit, free from any surprise that could deter your fun,” Cibola National Forest officials stated in a recent press release.

The restrictions prohibit the following

• Building, maintaining, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire – except when in a developed camp and picnic ground where stoves are maintained by Cibola NF.

• Smoking, except when in an enclosed vehicle or building in a developed camp or picnic ground.

• Using fireworks, possessing fireworks or any other type of pyrotechnical device.

These new restrictions went into place on Oct. 23 at 8 a.m.

“In order to ensure the health and safety of forest visitors now and in the future, we ask you to follow the guidelines established to protect the forest and the natural environment. Long term and temporary closure orders and prohibitions are posted on the website, posted on bulletin boards, or located in the district or supervisor’s office,” Cibola NF said in a press release.

Inclement weather may result in the temporary closure of the Cibola National Forest and Grassland offices including the Mount Taylor Ranger District.

Call the Mount Taylor office, 505-287-8833, or the supervisors office, 505-346-3900, for more information.
